Many of the tools dentists use may seem intimidating at first, but each one has a specific purpose that helps make your visit more efficient, comfortable, and effective. Here are some of the most common instruments you’ll find at your dentist’s office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Dental Mirror<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The small mirror attached to a thin handle is one of the most recognizable dental tools. Because your dentist can’t see every surface of your teeth directly, the mirror provides a clear view of hard-to-reach areas, including the backs of your teeth and along the gumline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dental Explorer<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes called a “probe,” the dental explorer is a slender instrument with a fine tip. Your dentist gently uses it to examine your teeth for signs of tooth decay, damaged fillings, and rough spots that may need attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite its sharp appearance, the explorer is designed to help identify potential problems before they become larger, more costly issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dental Scaler<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Even with excellent brushing and flossing habits, hardened plaque\u2014known as tartar\u2014can build up on your teeth over time. A dental scaler is used during professional cleanings to carefully remove these deposits from above and below the gumline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
