Your oral and overall health are connected. Various dental issues can affect your wellness. You can invest in a healthy mouth and body by committing to 5 New Year\u2019s resolutions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Brush After Every Meal<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Your toothbrush is the most frequently used item you have at home to keep your mouth healthy. The American Dental Association recommends brushing your teeth at least twice daily to remove food residue and plaque. Strive to brush after every meal to keep your teeth clean and healthy. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste to clean all surfaces of your teeth for 2 minutes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Floss Your Teeth Every Day<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Your toothbrush is effective, but it can\u2019t clean everywhere in your mouth, like between teeth. Flossing is the only way to clean the areas your toothbrush can\u2019t reach to keep your gums healthy. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that at least 50% of adults over the age of 30 have gum disease. Not only is it a leading cause of tooth loss, but it is also linked to an increased risk of various health issues, including heart disease, diabetic complications, and memory loss. Daily flossing will remove plaque buildup to protect your smile from gum disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Limit Sugars and Starches<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Did you know that 92% of adults have experienced tooth decay? Sugars and starches feed cavity-causing bacteria that can weaken your enamel over time. Limiting starches and sugars will lessen your risk of decay. If you can\u2019t resist your sweet tooth, brush your teeth after you\u2019ve finished.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Drink More Water<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Dehydration causes your saliva production to decline. A dry mouth encourages oral bacteria growth that can lead to bad breath, cavities, and infections. Healthcare professionals recommend drinking at least eight 8-oz glasses of water every day. You\u2019ll stay hydrated to keep your mouth moist. Every sip will also rinse your teeth to reduce oral bacteria and food residue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. Visit Your Dentist Every 6 Months<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Besides caring for your mouth at home, commit to visiting your dentist every 6 months for a cleaning and checkup. Your dental hygienist will keep your teeth clean and looking their best.
