
The new year is almost here. That means that it’s nearly time to get started on your resolutions to make 2026 the best year yet! If you haven’t already, it’s a good idea to incorporate some changes that will benefit your smile. Many of us aren’t taking all of the right steps to maintain excellent oral health, so this is the perfect time to implement best practices. Here are some resolutions to keep your grin in good shape!
Attend Your Cleanings & Checkups
It is estimated that a third of Americans don’t see their dentist as often as they would like to. Whether you’ve been skipping your checkups due to your busy schedule, or you keep forgetting to make your next appointment, now is the perfect time to get on track with routine visits. Give your dentist a call to schedule your checkups. Don’t forget to schedule your next one before you leave.
Floss More Often
Are you constantly told by your dental team that you aren’t flossing enough. This isn’t something you can hide. Because you aren’t able to reach all of the areas of your mouth with just your toothbrush, flossing is also needed to clean between the teeth and beneath the gumline. Get a fresh container of dental floss to place next to your toothpaste so you don’t forget.
Give Up Smoking
You already know that using tobacco products is terrible for your health, but did you know that it has specific effects on your smile? Smoking doubles your risk of gum disease and many other health problems, including oral cancer. Since this habit is particularly difficult to give up, finding a healthier replacement activity for when the craving kicks in is helpful.
Go Easy on Sugar
A surgery treat here and there doesn’t do too much harm. However, if you are constantly munching on them throughout the day, your oral health could be at risk. Buy fewer sugary sweets when you go grocery shopping and try to find something more nutrient dense to satisfy your cravings. For example, if you like having soda with your lunch, try switching it out with ice-cold sparkling water instead.
Eat a Tooth-Healthy Diet
Not all foods are harmful for your smile. Some foods are actually beneficial. Try including more healthy items in your diet, like dairy products that contain a lot of calcium and high-fiber fruits and veggies. Yogurt, cheese, apples, carrots, and celery are excellent choices.
Set your smile up for success in 2026. By doing the things listed above, you can expect a boost in your oral health.
