What Are Dental Lasers?

A laser is basically a highly concentrated beam of light. There are a few different types of dental lasers, but in our office, we use something called a diode laser from the brand SOL. It converts electrical energy into laser light. It can be great for a range of purposes, such as hygiene, gum disease treatment, and more. It is exclusively a soft tissue laser, meaning that it works only on the soft tissues in the mouth (not hard tissues like the teeth).

Types of Laser Dental Treatments

Lasers are versatile, so they have a range of applications in dental and medical settings. In our practice, we use our SOL diode laser to promote the health of gum tissue. Here are a few more details about how the laser can work on this important part of your smile:

Periodontal Therapy

As part of gum disease treatment (also called periodontal therapy), we may use the laser to kill harmful bacteria that has accumulated beneath your gumline. It can also precisely remove diseased gum tissue, creating an environment that is conducive to healing.

Gum Recontouring

If you have excess gum tissue that makes your teeth appear short or stubby, you might be interested in gum recontouring. This cosmetic procedure involves the careful trimming of your gum tissue. This can expose more of your teeth’s structure, making them appear longer and more proportionate. It can also create a more even gumline overall.

The Benefits of Laser Dentistry

Laser dentistry is amazing! Here are some of its most noteworthy benefits:

  • Minimally invasive procedures: You will experience less bleeding and discomfort compared to traditional surgical methods, making your recovery easier and faster.
  • Reduced risk of infection: The laser sterilizes the treatment area as it works, lowering your chances of developing an infection after your procedure.
  • Greater precision: Your dentist can target only the affected tissue, preserving more of your healthy gums and achieving more predictable results.
  • Less need for anesthesia: You may not require as much numbing medication, since laser procedures are generally quite comfortable.
  • Minimal swelling and scarring: You will likely see less swelling and tissue trauma, resulting in a more comfortable experience and improved cosmetic outcomes.
