Though it’s certainly bad, losing multiple teeth isn’t the end of the world. You can always address the problem by getting a dental bridge or partial denture. But wait: Which of these options would suit your smile the most? Your Owasso dental team takes that question seriously, so we’re here to address it directly. Just keep reading to learn about dental bridges, partial dentures, and which of the two will better restore your grin.
How Does a Dental Bridge Work?
Depending on your case, you should consider a dental bridge. This appliance offers a unique way to “restore” several missing teeth.
A dental bridge consists of materials fused to either side of an artificial tooth. Depending on the type, such materials could be standard dental crowns or sturdy dental implants. It follows that a dental bridge is a “fixed” device that restores anywhere from one to four adjacent lost teeth.
Notably, only patients with healthy mouths can get a dental bridge. The natural teeth must be stable enough to keep the appliance in place; treatment won’t work otherwise.
What About a Partial Denture?
If a dental bridge isn’t for you, don’t worry; a partial denture would likely help. The latter option has unique advantages of its own.
A partial denture – per its name – only replaces some pearly whites. Made of a pink acrylic base and artificial teeth, it fits snugly over the gumline (via suction) or clasps onto nearby natural teeth. This device is thus removable and able to replace a great many (though not all) teeth.
To be clear, a partial denture often fits poorly over time. Changes in a patient’s jaw and gum tissues can alter mouth shape, causing the appliance to sit less snugly.
Which Option Suits You Best?
Neither dental bridges nor partial dentures are inherently “better” than the other. Ultimately, which option suits you best will depend on your situation.
A patient should consider their background when making the choice. If someone’s lost teeth were adjacent, a dental bridge would work better; it’d quickly fill their large smile gap. Those wanting a removable restoration, meanwhile, should get partial dentures. Would-be patients will also want to account for the devices’ relative costs, lifespans, etc.
More importantly, please consult your dentist before choosing a dental bridge or partial denture. They can make an informed suggestion based on their knowledge of your oral health.
